Ðây là Chương trình Anh Ngữ Sinh Ðộng New Dynamic English bài 122; Phạm Văn xin kính chào quí vị thính giả.  Chủ  đề của bài học hôm nay là ‘‘Do Guns Cause Crime?’’- Súng có phải  là nguồn gốc gây nên tội phạm không? 

Bài học hôm nay cũng cho ta biết cách đưa ra ý kiến riêng—how to give a personal opinion.  Ta cũng  học cách dùng mệnh đề có chữ IF để diễn tả một tình trạng không thực, giả tưởng, ở  hiện tại-to speculate about unreal situations.  Crime=tội phạm.Tĩnh từ là criminal. Danh từ a criminal=một tội phạm. Criminal law=hình luật. Speculate= suy luận, phỏng đoán, think, guess, reason. Scientists only speculate about life in other planets.= các nhà khoa học chỉ suy đoán về đời sống trên các hành tinh khác. Jazz musician=nhạc sĩ chơi nhạc Jazz

Larry: New Dynamic English is a basic English language course and an introduction to American people and culture.

 Today’s unit is “Do Guns Cause Crime?”

 It will also show how to use “if” to speculate about unreal situations.

Kathy: Hi, Max.

Max: Hi, Kathy.

 Who’s our guest today?

Kathy: Today our guest is Sandy Steele.

Max: Oh, Sandy.  He’s a student at American University.

Kathy: And a jazz musician.  That’s right...

Go duck hunting=đi săn vịt.  Sandy liked to go hunting with his father when he was  a boy.=Sandy thích đi săn với cha anh khi anh còn là một cậu bé. When I was a boy, I went hunting every summer with my father.=khi tôi còn nhỏ, mùa hè nào tôi cũng đi săn với cha tôi. I liked being outdoors with my dad.=tôi thích ở ngoài trời với cha tôi. Outdoors=ngoài trời; indoors=trong nhà. She’s  not  an  outdoor  type=cô ta không thích hoạt động ngoài trời. She  likes  being indoors.  Phân biệt: Indoor là  tiếng adjective; indoors là  một adverb. Sandy: Well, when I was a boy, I went hunting every summer with my father.

 We went duck hunting.

Kathy: Did you enjoy hunting?

Sandy: Yes, I did.  I liked being outdoors with my Dad.

Kathy: Do you still go hunting?

Sandy: Not very often.  But sometimes... sometimes I go hunting.

Kathy: Do you own a gun?

Sandy: Yes, I do.  I own a gun, for hunting.

Kathy: Our guest is Sandy Steele.  We’ll talk more after our break.

Trong phần tới, quí vị nghe và lập lại.  Nhớ lại là sau động từ “go’’ trong mấy thành ngữ sau đây, động từ theo sau ở thể v ing.  Go dancing=đi khiêu vũ; go hunting=đi săn; go fishing=đi câu; go boating=đi thuyền; go swimming=đi bơi. Sau động từ enjoy và like (ưa thích), động từ theo sau ở thể  v ing. Enjoy  hunting=thích đi săn; like being outdoors=thích ở ngoài trời.

Dangerous=nguy hiểm. Well, I don’t agree.=tôi không đồng ý. Many Americans think it is dangerous for people to have guns in their homes=nhiều người Mỹ nghĩ là trong nhà có súng thì nguy hiểm.
